Após sair do New York Dolls, formou a banda Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers com Jerry Nolan (bateria no New York Dolls), Richard Hell (baixo no Television) que depois de pouco tempo saiu para formar Richard Hell and the Voidoids sendo substituido por Billy Rath. Walter Lure que foi incorporado a banda após a primeira apresentação.
Em turne pela America e Inglaterra, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers lançaram L.A.M.F e se mudaram para Inglaterra obtendo bastante fama na cena inglesa e mundial do punk.
